TRIP ITINERARY
Camels market at Shalateen is located 230 kilometers south of Marsa Alam; Shalateen represents one of the still standing strongholds of Egyptian- Sudanese trading and one of the most important commercial points in the southern Egypt for camel and above all the handmade articles.
It was closed for long time for any kind of tourism. The town has a vibrant souk and has an array of shops for spices and perfumes There are only a few limited facilities but there is at least a bank, a police station, a post office, a simple but popular restaurant, Basmit El Ganoub, serving grilled meat or chicken and a hotel called (not joking) Baghout (meaning “The flea.”) It seemed quite clean where you can stay overnight if you like.
Shalateen is a cosmopolitan — on a much smaller scale. The community is composed of three tribes:
- Bisharin, which represents the majority of the population
- Ababda, a smaller tribe
- Rashayda, a minority with only a few thousand people.
Though both Ababda and Bisharin originally speak different dialects of a verbal language called To-Bedawie, or rather Rotana as it is most commonly known, Ababda have adapted Arabic as their mother tongue while Bisharin still cling to Rotana. Most Bisharins living in Shalateen can communicate in Arabic as well.
Here you’ll visit the camel market, where you can see thousands of camels being traded between the Egyptian and the Sudanese. After seeing the camels, visit the camel market area where you can haggle with the hundreds of outlets selling many souvenir items or visit the Egyptian café, super market or restaurant.
Buyers from all across Egypt converge here to choose from the different breeds brought by herders who come from Sudan. Some buyers want fine-looking white camels, possibly for tourist-related businesses; others look for strong, well-built camels that can handle hard labor, while many are just looking for pounds of meat.
After the shopping is done, the camels are taken to the loading area, where they climb into the trucks with the help of man-made platforms and ramps. If this area is too crowded, the men have no choice but to heft the camel into the truck themselves. Riding a camel is easy, but carrying it is hard. It takes about half a dozen men to lift one small camel into a truck.
