TRIP ITINERARY
You will start the day with your breakfast box from your hotel or your Nile cruise boat which you had to order one night before. Your guide will pick you up and drive with air-conditioned vehicle to the ancient pilgrimage sites of Dendera and Abydos.
You will start your tour from Dendera temple which is located about 2.5 km south-east of Dendera, 60 kilometers north of Luxor on the west bank of the Nile River.
The Temple is one of the latest and best-preserved temple complexes in Egypt and it was dedicated to the goddess Hathor, the goddess of motherhood, beauty, sexuality, love, joy, harmony, dance and music was often associated with the planet, Venus. Ptolemy VIII and Queen Cleopatra II built it, and then later, Roman Emperors continued to decorate it and honor the Goddess Hathor. The Greeks identified the Goddess Hathor as Aphrodite.
Dendera was an ancient healing center, comparable to a Greek Asklepion or the Catholic Lourdes. In here you can enjoy your guide explanation about the unique scenes of Dendera like the huge carving on the back wall of Cleopatra with her son Caesarian, son of Julius Caesar, making offerings to Hathor and all the other deities of Dendera, also you can enjoy one of the most fascinating scenes which decorate the roof chapel dedicated to Osiris or what is known as circular zodiac or The zodiac, a replica of the original that is displayed now in Louvre in Paris.
Among the many other structures here are the remains of a 5th-century Christian basilica, an excellent example of early Coptic Church architecture, the sacred Lake and the Mammisi or the birth house (in which was celebrated the birth of Ihy, the son of Horus and Hathor) After you will finish taking some unforgettable pictures.
You will proceed with your guide to visit Abydos temple of Seti first which is two hours away from Dendera. Abydos was an important centre already since Early Dynastic Periods, tombs of First and Second Dynasty kings were excavated there.
The Temple of Seti first at Abydos was begun during the reign of Pharoah Seti first and completed by his son Ramses second during the nineteenth Dynasty of the New Kingdom. The temple is well preserved and it is one of the most valuable archaeological sites and it has one of the most complete king lists which is called Abydos list. It dates back to the 19th Dynasty and it shows the king Seti with his young son (later Ramses second) making offerings before a list of cartouches of 76 kings in chronological sequence, Starting from Menes of the first Dynasty and ending with Seti first of the nineteenth Dynasty.
Also here they found in 1848 what is become later like The Helicopter Mystery and still unexplained till now. Also there are 7 shrines dedicated to 7 Gods: Osiris, Isis, Horus, Amon Ra, Ra Hor Akhty and Ptah, and Seti I as a deified King. It is believed that these shrines once contained the sacred boats of the God’s. Each of them has false doors (except for Osiris) with a Stella mentioning the God. The shrine of Osiris doesn’t have a false door; it has representations of the God Osiris’ Jed sign (the pillar of Osiris), with scenes of the Osiris myth.
Abydos is still a place of pilgrimage for Spiritual travelers and is said to be the burial place of the head of Osiris that’s why here you can visit the Osireion, a cenotaph built to honor the god Osiris and also a temple built by his son Rameses the second, not as well preserved, but anyway interesting, as it shows the battles of this pharaoh. Lunch will be taken in local restaurant then drive back to Luxor to your hotel or Nile cruise boat.
