The monastery of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul is one of the best excursions you can have while you are in Hurghada. Your professional guide will meet you at the reception of your hotel with an air-conditioned vehicle to the Coptic monasteries of the monastery of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul near Zafarana, 240 kilometers north of Hurghada.
Monastery of Saint Anthony
You will start your tour with your guide from the Monastery of Saint Anthony, which is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in the world, together with Saint Catherine’s monastery on Mount Sinai. Saint Anthony was born in the year 250 AD in the city of Keman near Beni Suif from Christian parents who raised him in the fear of God.
Once he hears the words of God in the church which changed his life” If thou will be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shall have a treasure in Heaven, and come and follow Me.” (Matt. 19:2). He went back home, he decided to live for God.
He went to the Eastern desert living in a Cave and hoping for solitude and spiritual salvation. He became the spiritual leader of his disciples and after his death; they built the monastery in 356 AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Julian the apostate.
Monastery of Saint Paul
The monastery is separate from the monastery of Saint Anthony by the south Gabel El- Galala Plateau. The monastery thrived between the 12th-15th centuries when monks were translating theological works into Arabic.
The monastery was often home to Monks from many different Christian religions; the monks who inhabited the monastery today still speak Coptic, after that, you will continue your visit to the monastery of Saint Paul.
Saint Paul was the youngest known Hermit when he was 16 years old, he escaped from Alexandria to the Eastern desert to be away from the Roman persecution.
Here you will find four churches on the site including the Cave Church of St Paul which is in the center and still keep St Paul’s remain and its believed that he spent his life in that Cave between 251-325 AD.
Antiquities Development project of ARCE between 1997-2005 AD supervised conservation works at the monastery. The worse time for the monastery was in 1483 when Bedouins expelled the majority of the monks and destroyed the library with its manuscripts, bakery and the Museum dedicated to the history of the site.
After the visit of the two monasteries, you will go back to your hotel in Hurghada.
