TRIP ITINERARY

Mons Porphyrites from Hurghada | Eastern Desert

Mons Porphyrites starts early morning with 4*4 jeep with a professional guide and a Bedouin driver. It is one of the best known and largest quarries in the Eastern desert which was discovered in 1822 by James Burtanin.

It seems also that the quarries in this area appear to have operated from the first into the fifth century. The earliest quarrying taking place under the emperor Tiberius.

Mons Porphyrites from Hurghada schedule

The tour starts with a stop on the top of a small mountain to watch the sunrise and make some nice photos for the area and the Red Sea Mountains. After that, you will complete your way between the mountains till the quarries.

Mons Porphyrites quarries are scattered over a large area and they were several settlements built to accommodate the workers and administrators responsible for the operation. It lies on the road between the Red Sea and Maximianopolis, the modern Qena or northwest of the modern Red Sea city of Hurghada.

Mons Porphyrites from Hurghada, Eastern Desert Highlights

Here, you can see a ruined fortress, three lifeless villages, abandoned temples and shrines, dry wells, broken pillars, cracked stone baths and overall large and impressive remains of hydraulic installation through the quarry and residential area indicate that water was obtained from digging wells in surrounding Wadi floors.

Mons Porphyrites was linked to the river Nile by the Via Porphyrites and known from the Second Century map of Ptolemy the Geographer. The way was marked out by seven hydreumata, or fortified wells, each one a day’s march from the next. Outside the fortifications are lines of large stones to which oxen were tethered at night.

Mons Porphyrites from Hurghada, Eastern Desert Stones

The stones from the quarries which were purple, flecked with white crystals and very fine-grained were used to decorate columns, sarcophagi, and temples.

Also, the stones can be seen in the in Hagia Sophia, the famous statue of Tetrarchs in San Marco basilica in Venice, the Sarcophagi of Helena, and the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great and of his daughter Constantia in the Vatican Museum.

Here also between the years 1994-1998, a British team undertook a detailed study that indicates surviving and mapping the remains and excavated portions of the site. These are also signs that as well as military and administrative personnel and quarry workers, women and children might have been present:  “Among the more startling finds are a hair-pin, cosmetic brush, and toy comb made from the oyster shell – evidence that women and children may have lived here alongside the men.

After you finish your tour and take some unforgettable pictures, you will be back to have Tea on fire and you will rest a bit before you will be taken back to your hotel in Hurghada.
