TRIP ITINERARY

Mons Claudianus Day Trip to the Roman Quarries

Mons Claudianus starts from your hotel around 05:00 am with 4*4 jeep. Mons Claudianus quarries are one of the best known and largest quarries in the Eastern desert which was discovered in 1823 by Wilkinson and Burton.

Mons Claudianus quarries

You will start your tour by a sunrise stop from the top of one of the little mountains on the way to the quarries. Then drive for about 40 minutes till the second stop or the Acacia tree in the middle of the desert. Upon arrival at the quarries, you will have some free time to have your breakfast before we will start our adventure in the place.

Mons Claudianus history

It seems also that the quarries in this area appear to have operated for a short time between the first and the third century. Mons Claudianus was a quarrying settlement in the mountain of the Red Sea midway between the Red Sea and the Nile, 20 miles off-road journey to get to it from the main Qena / Hurghada road.

Mons Claudianus Highlights

Here, you can see numerous columns, tubs; a bath can still be found lying broken, many buildings still intact to the roof height, camp, dwellings, workshops, stables, and a dromos.

The site also houses the ruins of a temple that Hadrian had started building without ever finishing it. The settlement resembled a fort with walls and projecting towers and housed an estimated 1000 people, both quarrymen, and guards. There are many facilities surviving from the Roman era that allows us to reconstruct how the quarrymen accessed the stone, remove it from high peak to Wadi floors below, and then transport it to the Nile.

Mons Claudianus Stones

Mons Claudianus was linked to the river Nile by a traceable surviving Roman road marked by way-stations spaced out at one-day intervals. The stones from the quarries were used to decorate the front porch of the Pantheon in Rome and the Basilica of Trajan in his forum. Also, the stones can be seen in the Flavian Palace on the palatine hill and in the baths of Caracalla.

Mons Claudianus Life

In here also between the years, 1987-1993 were found 9200 ostraca written in Greek and some in Latin detail many aspects of the lives of the men, women, and children who made Mons Claudianus their home.

The Ostracs refer to four groups of people

  • soldiers and
  • officials
  • skilled
  • civilian workers
  • unskilled workers
  • women and children

Many of the workers from the pay records at Mons Claudianus earned around 47 drachmas a month -which was about twice as much as their counterparts in the Nile Valley. From the requests for various foods to be sent from the Nile.

Mons Claudianus food

we have evidence of 55 different food plants and 20 sources of animal proteins. Fish from the red sea, as well as pepper from India and Game animals, snails and oysters, were some of the foods available.  Findings of seeds of cabbage, leaf beet, lettuce, mint, basil, and a few others, which would not have been present if the vegetables were delivered to eat, suggest that food was both delivered and grown at Mons Claudianus, to maintain the health of the workers with proper iron and vitamin C intake.

After you finish your tour and take some unforgettable pictures, you will be driven back to your hotel in Hurghada.
