TRIP ITINERARY

Ghost City Day Tour From Hurghada

Ghost city day tour from Hurghada starts with pick you up from the hotels after lunch then you will be taken to Um Al Huwaytat village or the ghost city, 26 kilometers after Safaga with 4*4 jeeps.

As soon as we reach the place, we will stop for the welcome drink in the Garage or the starting point for the trip. In the same time you can use the toilets and be fresh for the unique tour you will have with your guide.

Your guide will help you to fix your scarf around your head before you will start your trip with the camels riding and watching the Bedouin woman while making the bread then you will go with your 4*4 Jeeps to the heavy damaged village.

Ghost City Village

In the village you will have many stops, first will be a place called panorama where you can have a perfect overview for the whole village but before this you will listen from your guide the story of the place and of 16,000 local people and families had an almost independent existence in the city.

The story of the born and growing village to become one of the most important mining towns of phosphate in Egypt at this time. Please open your heart and mind and listen from your guide how under the British occupation which lasts for 40 years (between 1882-1922), the place bore witness for that period starts from 1907 and in the years thereafter. The function infrastructure with housing, schools, hospital, shops, mosques were built.

Ghost City and Phosphate Mining

There in the houses you will see some cartons of the Dynamite with which they were removing the phosphate and the train service railway which was built specially to transport the phosphate from the mines to the port for shipment to England.

Not only this, you will see how smart they were when they used the way back of the trains to transport the food, water, building materials and working staff to the village. Because of these Tons of phosphate which removed daily, loaded and shipped out, Egypt had an additional income and jobs for thousands of citizens.

In the heydays as we mentioned 16,000 local people and families lived in the place. The guide will show you the one or two housed and the building materials they used and how they made ceilings for those housed. The police office and the restaurant, the villa for the English engineer and shops, the phosphate mines and how deep they are (you will go inside one of them), the mosque and the cemetery of the village in that time.

Ghost City Traditions

The guide will explain you also the traditions of those people, their habit, marriage ceremonies, education, lighting system from phosphate lamps then generators then electricity. When they had the first TV and what they used before. The guide will end with the bad news and how in 1996, a flood summoned by a strong storm caused heavy damage to Umm Al Huwaytat and the city has been abandoned since 2000. Everything useful, like wood, steel and housing facilities, was taken and the “Ghost City” was re-branded as a destination for visitors and tourists.

All these stories and more you will listen from your guide before you will go back to the garage to rest and have your fresh cooked dinner with mineral water and soft drink then you will have the Bedouin tea and Shisha or water pipe fro those who like to try then back to your hotels.
