TRIP ITINERARY

You will have your breakfast at your hotel in Cairo then your Guide will pick you up with air-condition vehicle to start an amazing day to the Bride of the Mediterranean, The City That Never sleeps, the Pearl of the Mediterranean or Lady Alexandria and you will visit some of its most famous sightseeing. On the way to Alexandria, your guide will explain to you the ancient Egyptian history and he will introduce you to the Greco-Roman history until you will reach your first stop. The Catacomb or the largest Roman Cemetery which is consisting of three levels cut in the rock under the ground level.

Then you will be driven to visit the Pompey’s Pillar, The red granite column which is 28 meters high and from an inscription in Greek written on the column we know it was not for Pompey as the Crusaders believe but was erected like Memorial column for Diocletian, the Roman emperor.

Then you will head to the western edge of Alexandria to visit from outside the Qaitbay Citadel which dates back to 1480 AD. Sultan El Ashraf Qaitbay built a series of castles fortress along the Egyptian seashore in order to fortify the Egyptian coastline against the Ottomans. So he built the citadel on the site of the Light House using some of its stones. Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant then you will go to your last visit, Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Finally, you will be driven to your hotel in Alexandria overnight.

Day 2 Rosetta

After having breakfast in your hotel, your guide will pick you up from your hotel to start your visit to the city of Rashid or Rosetta which is lying 65 km east of Alexandria. It takes like one-hour driving.

We will start our tour with Rashid Museum or Rosetta National Museum which is located in a restored 18th-century house. Four stories high, There is a replica of the Rosetta stone near the entrance. It was built to preserve objects related to the history of Rashid. The archives locate at the first story host transcripts of manuscripts belonging to the Ancient Egyptian Art Revival Center while the second and third are designed to host 334 antiques, the most remarkable of which are the marbles, vessel holders and gravestones bearing inscriptions in Kufic writing.

Then you will have a walking tour with your guide to the center of old Rosetta which preserves a number of magnificent townhouses built in the so-called ‘Delta style’. There are at least 22 of them tucked away along the streets. Unfortunately, most are not open to visitors; although you can admire their decorated facades, carved lintels and elaborate Mashrabia work (projecting balconies)

you will visit the house of Amasyali which is one of the best houses in Rosetta with its lantern lights and Mashrabiyyas. It was built in around 1808 for the Turkish Aga, Ali al-Topgi After that you will head to Abu Shaheen house with its Mill with its huge wooden grinders and delicately pointed keyhole arches. The mill was built around 1808 for the Turkish Agha, Ali al-Topgi, who bequeathed them both to his servant Al-Amasyali.the mill was an animal-powered mill where the grind-stone was driven by donkey and used to grin wheat and rice.

After the houses tour, it is time to visit the Hanging Mosque or Al-Muallaq Mosque, the only one of its kind in Rosetta. It is named Al-Muallaq because it is located on the first floor built on a ground floor composed of storerooms and small shops. The mosque is accessed via a wooden staircase on the eastern and western sides and it has a wooden ceiling supported by 10 columns. Walls are decorated with ceramic tiles and the Mihrab and the Qibla are among the most beautiful of Rosetta.

The next stop from outside will be Zaghloul Mosque; it is the oldest and largest mosque. It has an area of 4,000 square meters. It locates at the southern entrance to Rasheed. It has more than 300 columns from various earlier buildings, their varying heights adjusted by the removal or duplication of capitals.

The last stop will be Forte Qaitbay; about 5km north of Rosetta along the Nile, this fort was built in 1479 to guard the mouth of the Nile 6km further on. The fort was originally modeled on Fort Qaitbay in Alexandria. It was known as the Julian fortress during the French occupation and today is known for its connection to Rosetta stone, which was found here by Napoleon’s soldiers in 1799.

Here you will have some free time to climb to the top of the Citadel along the fortified walls to see the lovely views of where the Nile meets the Mediterranean. You will then leave the Citadel and head back to your hotel in Cairo.
