TRIP ITINERARY

Fayoum, El Fayoum or Fayoum Oasis is one the best activities in Cairo you do not have to miss while you are on vacation. Fayoum is famous for its beautiful nature, fertile land, and overall archaeological sites. Fayoum has two protectorate areas Lake Qarun and Wadi Rayan National Parks. The best said about Fayoum by one of the poetic who said” Cool is the dawns; tall are the trees; many are the fruits; little is the rains ”

Getting in Fayoum

After enjoying your breakfast in the hotel, your guide will pick you up with an air-conditioned vehicle to start a full-day tour to one of the major destinations for ecotourism not only in Egypt but also worldwide.

Fayoum or Fayoum Oasis even it is not true Oasis(since it depends on Nile water instead of underground springs and wells) is famous for its rich natural resources, interesting history and three protected areas including the valley of the Whales which was declared as a UNESCO world heritage site.

Moreover, Fayoum has a unique blend of climate and geology creates a fascinating landscape in this desert region. After a one-hour driving trip while enjoying the pleasurable way to El Fayoum with its lush green surroundings for about 90 kilometers on the west-southern part of Cairo.

First Stop Karanis and Water Wheels

You will start your trip with the city of Karanis which goes back to the third century B.C and was founded by Greek mercenaries in the northeast corner of the Fayoum. In here you will enjoy visiting many ruined temples date back to the Greco-Roman era. Then you will proceed to see the water wheels. It is known that Fayoum has a great number of water wheels which were an important addition to the Fayoum economy in the third century. The two best places to see water wheels are either in Fayoum City, which has 4 standing next to each other or 3 km north of town, there is a cluster of 7 water wheels.

Second Stop Lake Qaroun

After that you will enjoy the Lake Qaroun which considers the largest Lake in the entire country and the oldest natural Lake in the world, 45 meters blew the sea level. Lake Qaroun is Egypt’s largest salt lake. Despite having shrunk over the past few thousand years, it’s about 215 square kilometers.

The lake was historically a freshwater lake, but since it receives drainage water from the canals in Fayoum, it has turned salty. It is considered an excellent site for water sports such as windsurfing and rowing, fishing and bird watching. For example swans – WAC -elderberry – rare falcons.

Lunch and Qasr Qaroun

Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant then you will be driven to Qasr Qaroun about 55 kilometers North West of Fayoum City. It has a well-preserved temple and remains of the Greco Roman City of Dionysios.

Wadi El Rayan Fayoum

Then into Wadi El Rayan a protected area since 1989, Wadi Rayan contains rare wildlife, 169 species of birds, ancient Roman and Pharaonic ruins, plus the surreal Valley of the Whales. Wadi Rayan has two fairly large lakes, connected by a little river and Egypt’s only waterfalls. Later your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Giza or Cairo.
