Aswan Sightseeing – Best Aswan Sites

Aswan attractions day tour is one of the best things to do in Aswan while you are there. It begins with pick up time from your hotel or Nile Cruise then you will start your tour with your guide to Aswan High Dam which is far 15 km from Aswan. On the way, you will pass by the old dam which made by the British 1902.

Aswan High Dam

Aswan Dam is a rock-fill dam, 300 kilometers to the north of the Sudanese borders. The dam started in 1960 and it was officially inaugurated in 1971. Aswan dan was considered an engineering miracle because it has 18 times stone materials used in the great pyramid in Cairo. The dam-controlled the annual floods and stopped the damage which used to occur along the floodplain meanwhile supply half of Egypt’s power supply.

Philae Temple – Isis Temple

Philae temple south of the Aswan old dam is considered the center of the cult of the goddess Isis and one of the last remaining places where the ancient religion and language survived after the arrival of Christianity. The temple was converted into a church which explains the defacement of many of the god’s figures. To reach the site of the temple on Agilika island in the middle of the Nile, you will get a motorboat.

Hear the history of your professional guide and admire the romantic Philae Temple on Philae Island that rocky island in the middle of the River Nile. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Isis and it’s considered one of the greatest Egyptian temples built in the Greco-Roman era. Many of the Ptolemaic kings added parts to the temple starting from PtolemyII, IV, V, VI, VII and Ptolemy XI. The temple was moved from its original place on Philae island to its present location on Egilika island after Egypt built the Aswan high dam.

Unfinished Obelisk

The unfinished Obelisk supposed to be the largest obelisk ever constructed but the project was uncompleted. Queen Hatshepsut ordered to cut the Obelisk during the New Kingdom to be erected at Karnak temple.

The Unfinished Obelisk located in Aswan granite quarries and it supposed to be the heaviest Obelisk ever constructed weighing 1200 tons and the tallest one measures 42 meters.

The unfinished Obelisk shows the techniques the ancients used to free the blocks from the bedrock. They made small holes or cavities around the four sides of the chosen size then they filled the holes with wooden logs. They then water the wooden logs made them expand causing detaching the Obelisk from the base.

Aswan unfinished Obelisk is between 8 other Obelsiks still in Egypt like those of Karnak temple, Luxor temple, Luxor Museum, Cairo international airport, Gezira Island, and Heliopolis Obelisk. At the end of the tour, your guide will take you back to your hotel or Nile cruise.
